AGEING INDUCES APOPTOSIS AND INCREASES HSP70 STRESS PROTEIN IN THE EPIDIDYMIS OF Octodon degus International Journal of Morphology
Bustos-Obregón,Eduardo; Esponda,Pedro.
Apoptosis has been largely analyzed in the testis. Nevertheless, the epididymis has been scarcely studied. We analyzed the number of apoptotic cells in the different regions (caput, corpus and cauda) of the epididymis of the South American rodent Octodon degus both young and senile. Apoptosis was identified using the TUNEL method which detects in situ DNA fragmentation. Apoptosis was detected in the principal cells of the epididymal epithelium. The caput epididymis was the region more affected. The caput of young animals showed that 0.32/1000 cells were apoptotic in contrast to 5.1/1000 of senile animals. Also in the cauda epididymis apoptosis is increased with age, appearing 0.14/1000 and 3.9/1000 in young and senile animals, respectively. On the other...

Cabral, Silvia Rosana Pagliarini; UNESP - IBILCE; Santos, Lia Raquel de Souza; UNESP - IBILCE; Franco-Belussi, Lilian; UNESP - IBILCE; Zieri, Rodrigo; UNESP - IBILCE; Zago, Carlos Eduardo Saranz; UNESP - IBILCE; Oliveira, Classius de; UNESP - IBILCE.
The reproductive system of male Phrynops geoffroanus adults is macroscopically described and the variation in testicular biometry is evaluated. A pair of oval testes is connected by the efferent ductules to the epididymis, which continue as deferent ducts, which emerge in the penis. The volume of the gonads showed the highest averages during spring and summer months. GSI varied significantly throughout the year, with the highest averages observed in the months that correspond to the end of spring and the beginning of summer, when the reproduction of the species takes place, and the lowest averages were seen in winter, suggesting a cyclical testicular activity.

HISTOLOGICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM OF MALE AND FEMALE HATCHLINGS OF THE MAGDALENA RIVER TURTLE (Podocnemis lewyana) Acta biol.Colomb.
SÁNCHEZ-OSPINA,ANDRÉS C; RODRIGUEZ,BERARDO; CEBALLOS,CLAUDIA P..
In this study we described the macroscopic and microscopic histology of the reproductive system of male and female Podocnemis lewyana neonates (3.5 months old). We found macroscopic differences in the morphology of the gonads between the sexes, with ovaries being twice as long as testes, and testes being twice as wide as ovaries. Microscopically, we identified several immature elements, such as the lack of a muscle layer in the oviduct of females, and simple epithelia instead of pseudostratified epithelia in the oviduct and epididymis described in reptile adults. We also found a black pigment observed macroscopically in the mesovarium, and macroscopically and histologically in the epididymis. This pigment is consistent with the center of melano-macrophages...

Histomorphometric Changes in the Testes and Epididymis of Wistar Strain Albino Rats Following Fourteen Days Oral Administration of Therapeutic Doses of Some Antibiotics International Journal of Morphology
Awobajo,F. O; Raji,Y; Akinloye,A. K.
Studies on testes and epididymis tissue of rats treated orally for fourteen days with therapeutic doses of cloxacillin (6mg/100g/day), ampicillin (4mg/100/day) and tetracycline (12mg/100g/day) separately showed a significant reduction in testicular and epididimis architecture. Microscopic studies of these male reproductive organs further revealed a significant alteration in the epididymis as revealed by a significant reduction (p<0.05) in epididymal ductular diameter (EDD), and epididymal epithelial height (EEH) in treated group of animals. A significant increase (p<0.05) was however recorded in epididymal luminal diameter (ELD) in all the animals after the two and three week's recovery period allowed. This gives another insight into the toxicity...

PENNA-VIDEAÚ,S.; CERMEÑO-VIVAS,J.; MORENO-MARVAL,M.; QUIROGA-NOTTI,M..
Scorpion envenoming is a public health concern in northeastern Venezuela. Specimens of the genus Tityus are responsible for most of these. In experimental animals, Tityus venom produces histopathological changes in the skeletal muscle and pancreas, but its toxicity to the reproductive system has not been studied. The aim of this work is to describe the histopathological changes in testis and epididymis of albino mice induced by the administration of Tityus n. sp. venom. Sub-lethal doses of venom (3.75 mg/g mouse) were administered intramuscularly (IM) daily for 4 days. On the fifth day, the animals were sacrificed and the testes and epididymes were quickly removed and processed for light microscopy. The venom induced alterations in spermatogenesis. Sertoli...

Increase in Apoptosis and of the Stress Protein HSP70 in the Mouse Epididymis Produced by the Antiandrogen Flutamide International Journal of Morphology
Bustos Obregón,Eduardo; Esponda,Pedro.
The general aim of this paper was to characterize some changes induced by androgen receptors blockage in the epithelial cells of the mouse epididymis. The antiandrogen flutamide was injected (10 mg/Kg b.w.) to adult male mice which were sacrificed 24h. and 72h. after. Controls injected with the vehicle (corn oil) were sacrificed at the same intervals. Cryosections were made of the epididymides and examined by the TUNEL method for quantification of apoptosis and also using immunocytochemistry to visualize the expression of the stress protein HSP70. The highest indexes of apoptosis were observed in the caput epididymis after 72 h. and were of 7.40 cells/1000 in contrast to controls (0.21 cells/1000). HSP70 appeared particularly increased in the caput and...

Localization of Total Proteins and Lactate Dehydrogenase in Hamster Epididymis International Journal of Morphology
Beu,Celia C. L.; Orsi,Antonio M; Domeniconi,Raquel F; Novelli,Ethel L. B..
The concentration of total protein measured by photocolorimetric methodology and reported as units per 100 mg of tissue decreased from the initial segment to the cauda epididymidis of the Golden hamster, being significant the numeric difference observed between these two regions. This observation was related with an increased synthesis and secretion of proteins to the lumen in proximal segments of the epididymidis duct, mainly in initial segment, as proposed for other rodents. LDH activity was higher in initial segment and distal cauda than in the caput and corpus epididymidis, although no significant differences in mean values had been observed. The high LDH activity observed in initial segment and cauda epididymidis of hamster had been related to an...

Morphological Features of the Apical Region in the Principal Cells of Mongrel Dog Epididymis International Journal of Morphology
Schimming,Bruno Cesar; Vicentini,Carlos Alberto.
The epithelial principal cells are the predominant cell type of the epididymis. These cells have been shown to be both secretory and endocytic cells. The apical region of the cytoplasm of principal cells in the mongrel dog are located close to the cell apex and tubular lumen, and shown microvilli at the luminal border and present a endocytic apparatus, that consists of coated pits and vesicles, endosomes of varying size, multivesicular bodies, and lysosomes. The endosomes, multivesicular bodies and lysosomes contained the electron-dense patches. These results suggest that principal cells of the epididymis in the dog as possess a highly developed endocytic apparatus play a role in endocytosis. These cells function are similarly to the related in other...

Morphological Study of the Cytoplasmic Droplets as an Index of Sperm Maturation in Black Bengal Buck (Capra hircus) International Journal of Morphology
Datta,Uttam; Bandopadhyay,Soumendra Kumar; Hembram,Manik Lal.
Location of the cytoplasmic droplets (CD) and their dimensions varied significantly (p<0.01) when sperm cells traverse through the regions of caput, corpus and cauda epididymis and vasdeferens respectively. The gradual diminution in the morphology of CD between the epididymal regions were related significantly (p<0.01, p<0.05). Caudal shift of the CD, along with regression in size and finally their exclusion from the sperm cells reflected one of the most important events in the maturation process of male gametes in Black Bengal buck.

Postnatal Developmental Anatomy of Testes and Epididymis of Gaddi Goats International Journal of Morphology
Pathak,Archana; Katiyar,R. S; Sharma,D. N; Farooqui,M. M.
The study revealed that the testes of one-day-old Gaddi goats have descended in the scrotum along with adnexa. They were elongated compressed latero-medially and became ovoid during their postnatal growth and morphogenesis. The two testes were not different significantly in their weight and measurement. The average weight which was about 2.9 gm at birth grew to 107 gm (40X) in pubertal animals and nearly maintained it during the post-puberty (113 g). The mean length (1.46 cm), width (0.85 cm) and thickness (0.62 cm) also grew by 47, 60, and 83 times, respectively. In post-pubertal animals it measured 7.06 x 5.20 x 5.10 cm. The study indicated a very fast growth of the testes from birth to puberty, which did not alter significantly after that. A relatively...
